Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, “I am going away, and I am coming to you.” If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us be on our way.
A Russian Orthodox Prayer: O God, grant me to greet the coming day in peace. Help me in all things to rely upon your holy will. In every hour of the day reveal your will to me. Bless all my dealings with those who surround me. Teach me to treat all that comes to me with peace of soul and with firm conviction, so that your will governs all. In all my deeds and words, guide my thoughts and feelings. In unforeseen events let me not forget that they are all sent by you. Teach me to act firmly and wisely, without embittering and embarrassing others. Give me strength to bear the fatigue of the coming day with all that it shall bring. Direct my will, teach me to pray, and pray yourself in me. Amen
A prayer of William Barclay (1907-78):
O God our Father, help us all through this day so to live that we may bring help to others, credit to ourselves and joy to those who love us and to you. May we be cheerful when things go wrong; persevering when things are difficult; serene when things are irritating. Enable us to be helpful to those in difficulties; kind to those in need; sympathetic to those who are sad. Grant that nothing may make us lose our tempers; nothing may take away our joy; nothing may ruffle our peace; nothing may make us bitter towards anyone. So grant that all with whom we work and whom we meet may see in us the reflection of you. This we ask for your love’s sake. Amen
Almighty God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen
