Il est né, le divin Enfant

This is a traditional French Christmas Carol, sung at the Carol Service at St. Margaret's Church, Newton, on December 20th at 4pm.

We felt it to be a particularly appropriate choice this year in view of the recent events in Paris.

Our tree depicts the chorus, the English translation of which, by Edward Bliss Reed is:

He is born, the Heavenly Child

Oboes play, set bagpipes sounding

He is born, the Heavenly Child

Let all sing His nativity.

The carol in its entirety tells of the birth of Jesus and the 4,000 year wait for this event, as foretold by the prophets.

Jesus Lord, O King with power,

Though a little babe You come here,

Jesus Lord, O King with power,
Rule o'er us from this glad hour.

In this centenary of the outbreak of WW1 in August 1914, many people have thought about those who fought or were affected by this war, especially their ancestors.

On Armistice Day, St Margaret’s had a small exhibition of photographs and information about the men from Newton who fought in World War One.

Newton’s War Memorial lists not only the men who died but also those who fought in WW1.

We were pleased to welcome villagers and  descendants to view the exhibition and attend the Time for Reflection service.

The folders of information on the men will be placed in St Margaret’s on future Remembrance Days.

If you have a relative who is listed on the memorials in the church or the village’s war memorial, we would welcome any information that you might have to offer and would welcome you at St Margaret’s to read the information gathered to date.
